Letter from our new Operations Associate: Carolina Escobar

I am thrilled to join the GlobeMed community as Operations Associate. In my role, I hope to contribute to GlobeMed’s continuous growth and innovation to advance health equity by empowering our network in different wayse. Estoy segura que juntos podemos lograr lo imposible.

Para continuar la tradición, my voy introducir. Gradué de Loyola University Chicago en deciembre del 2015 with my BA in International Studies with minors in Sociology and Anthropology. As a first-generation student and graduate, I learned to thrive in spaces outside my comfort zone. Through my experiences as an undergraduate student, I learned that we all have stories and that those stories are worth being heard. During my time at Loyola, I had the privilege to study abroad for a semester in Rome, Italy, and interned at a community organization called Casa di Kim, where I worked with mothers in a collective home to support the treatment plans for their children. Mothers and children at Casa di Kim travel from various countries in African and Middle Eastern countries to receive the medical care they need and otherwise could not access in their home countries. The mothers and children at Casa di Kim hold a special place in my heart. They taught me the true meaning of power and love, by providing an environment where the community can heal.

Cuando regrese a los Estados Unidos, I was a Midwest Academy trainee at Jane Addams Senior Caucus. I practiced grassroots organizing to mobilize communities for social change. By mobilizing seniors in a Get Out The Vote Campaign, I learned the importance of empowering communities to share their stories to build power. I also learned that effective systematic change is most effective when multiple generations gather to think critically about how we can shift systems of power to achieve justicia social.

Most recently I worked at One Hope United on the Fund Developments team. As the Development and Growth Coordinator, I focused on improving efficiency and tracking of incoming funds. I also advanced OHU’s vision of developing lives without limits for children and family by seeking high-impact growth opportunities to expand service. Here, I also learned to think critically and creatively about funding strategies, especially when the Illinois state budget was nonexistent.

I look forward to immersing myself in the GlobeMed network to combine our experiences, speak truth to power, and create innovative solutions as we mobilize toward health equity.

Carolina Xiomara
