Pam Barnes Challenges Students to Follow and Lead
by Ashley Hagaman on March 15, 2010
On the morning of the final full day of the Summit, Pam Barnes delivered an introspective account of her life and drew several important lessons specifically for her GlobeMed student audience. She began with admitting that she constantly found new struggles, new challenges, and new situations that she, as a successful woman in the corporate world, had to overcome. She spoke of her leadership experience, her personal life, and her time spent with the Peace Corps alongside her husband. She proclaimed that humility, the ability to be 'a good follower', the ability to listen and find one's 'North Star' had become her most important life lessons. Shannon Fuller, president of GlobeMed at Rhodes College, stated after the talk that, "Pam Barnes offered valuable leadership advice to us students at the 2010 GlobeMed Global Health Summit. After the tremendous enthusiasm generated by the Summit's earlier activities, Barnes' speech helped us think about ways to channel that passion not only into our personal actions but also into other people."
Barnes' talk resonated closely with many Summit Participants. Her honesty and humility prompted students to take a similarly introspective look at their own life paths and aspirations. We are honored and proud to say that Pam Barnes gave a wonderful plenary session that has continued to receive incredible feedback from students across our GlobeMed Network.
