Who We Are

Founded in 2008, GlobeMed at Rhodes College is one of 46 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. We partner with A Ministry Of Sharing, Health and Hope (AMOS) in Nicaragua. Together we work in impoverished rural communities with a focus on water sanitation and nutrition. Throughout the year we also implement fundraising and educational initiatives to engage our campus and the surrounding Memphis Community.

Our Partner - A Ministry of Sharing Health and Hope (AMOS)

AMOS Health & Hope is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of poor and marginalized rural populations in Nicaragua, and has been a partner with GlobeMed at Rhodes College since January 2009. The organization was established in 2006 by two physicians and uses a strategy of community-based primary health care to increase health coverage in areas with limited services. AMOS trains lay health workers in rural communities to manage and their own community health clinic, prevent and treat the most common illnesses, and work on community development to address the root causes of poor health such as access to safe water and sanitation.

Our Project - $1,500 for food for 100 families impacted by flooding

In the past few weeks heavy rains have hit Central America. The rising flood levels have affected many of the communities we have worked in.  There are three in particular that have been cut off from the rest of the world with very little to eat, in some cases just surviving off tortillas.  Although things may seem grim now, as the water levels go back down things will get worse. As small pools of water are left behind they will become breeding grounds for mosquitos which carry their own diseases such as Malaria. The people living in these communities are farmers, who mainly farm for sustenance. The floods will have wiped out most of their crops, leaving them no source of food or possible income for the coming year.  Just $15 will pay for a packet of food that will help the families when the water goes back down. This will pay for a packet with 8 pounds of rice, 5 pounds of beans, 1 liter of oil, 2 bags of powdered milk with iron, and 2 pounds of sugar. This will provide much need nutrition. Our goal is to help 100 families and raise $1,500 dollars over the next 15 days. Please donate if you want to contribute to the emergency fund to help our partner community in their time of need.
