Who We Are

Founded in 2010, GlobeMed at The University of Rochester is one of 46 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. We partner with Kallpa Iquitos in Iquitos, Peru to support programs that bring together youth and adults in Iquitos to develop creative and innovative solutions that improve the health, education and quality of life within their communities. Through their work, Kallpa aims to allow youth rom disadvantaged backgrounds to develop to their full potential.

Our Partner - Kallpa Iquitos in Iquitos, Peru

Associación Kallpa in Iquitos is part of the larger Associación Kallpa organization whose overall mission is to create healthy communities through “partnership, democracy, respect and creativity”. Initially focusing their work in schools with youth health promoters, in 2005 Kallpa adopted the idea of “healthy communities” as their central focus.

Kallpa in Iquitos fully embodies the idea of working together as a community to fight health injustices and build a more equitable environment in the Iquitos area. They aim to achieve this goal by focusing on developing the "youth as protagonists," empowering youth leaders to improve their communties.  Currently, Kallpa’s Youth Promoters are working with the older members of the community to create projects surrounding themes of sanitation, sexual and reproductive health, violence and drug abuse, and environmental health within their barrio. Together with the older members of the community and Kallpa, they develop their ideas into practical projects that tangibly impact the well-being of their community.

Our Project - $3,400 to supprt "Youth in Progress" and The El Porvenir Community Youth Center

This year, our aim is to raise $3400 to support Kallpa’s "Youth in Progress" program and the development of a community youth center.

"Youth in Progress": This grassroots organization of community adults and youth leaders developed out of Kallpa’s work in the impoverished neighborhood of El Porvenir. The organization, which has a Board of Directors and meets weekly, unites adults and youth to find creative solutions to community issues. Together, the group of 12-35 youth promoters develop ideas for small projects to improve the quality of life for youth in their neighborhoods. Working with the older members and Kallpa, they create practical projects that tangibly impact the well-being of their community. These projects span from neighborhood clean-ups to literacy programs to education about the health risks of alcoholism, drug addiction, and gang violence.

The Youth Center: One result of the healthy communities project in this neighborhood is the development of a local center from which Kallpa provides many of its health and educational programs. The center provides a safe space for youth to gather, play, learn, and train to be youth leaders.
