GlobeMed Alumni

It’s the GlobeMed alumni, who are leaders for global health equity, that do the work of creating healthier, more equitable communities. We know that whatever path they go down in their lives, their direction is informed and based on the lessons and worldview they gained from their time in GlobeMed. GlobeMed alumni are starting nonprofits, conducting clinical research of cancer, organizing for No DAPL, and volunteering as a medic for Black Lives Matter protests. They are working as attorneys, emergency room technicians, physicians, and advocacy and policy coordinators. This is the community of global health equity leaders that the world needs.

There are more than 6,000 GlobeMed alumni who are using the Leadership Practices and social justice approach that they learned and nurtured during their time as a GlobeMed student. A majority of GlobeMed alumni pursue advanced degrees and work for nonprofits or community-based organizations.

You can check out inspiring stories from and about GlobeMed alumni on our blog and a number of episodes of our podcast, GlobeMed Talk.

GlobeMed is the single most important source of current values and interpersonal skills that I hold. GlobeMed has shaped me into the type of leader and peer that I am proud to be and continues to challenge me to become a better public health researcher, advocate, mentor, and friend.

Who are GlobeMed Alumni?

One of the goals of GlobeMed was to nurture young leaders and create learning opportunities for people from backgrounds that have historically been marginalized and kept out of global health leadership positions. In order to create a more equitable world, people who have lived experiences of the impact of health inequities need to be leading the conversations and responses.

The Unique GlobeMed Experience

Each GlobeMed chapter had unique and student-led opportunities for all members to participate in. These opportunities provided hands-on learning experiences, from event planning and chapter management to fundraising and financial planning to supporting international development projects at groundbreaking grassroots organizations. It’s these unique opportunities that alumni identify as being especially important to their leadership growth.

Global Health Equity Leaders

GlobeMed alumni go on to become real changemakers in the world. The majority continue on to pursue graduate degrees, continuing in the practice of being curious and a lifelong learner. When they do enter the workforce, they are overwhelmingly working in areas where they are able to apply their social justice approach and build a healthier, more equitable world.

Where GlobeMed Alumni Work

My experience with GlobeMed kept me committed to the field of global health and health services research as I was able to be involved in the day to day running of a hospital. Following my undergraduate experience I enrolled first in a MPH program, and then a PhD program. I’m currently a professor of health services, policy, and practice at the Brown University School of Public Health, and I credit GlobeMed in part for getting me here.

GlobeMed Alumni Network

GlobeMed alumni continue to organize and collaborate with each other to fight for a healthier, more equitable world. They say that meeting another GlobeMed alum, even if they’ve never met before, is like running into an old friend: there’s an understanding of shared values and perspectives as well as a desire to get involved as create solutions.

If you are looking to connect with other GlobeMed alumni, you can email aeb@globemed.org. In the year before GlobeMed’s closing, we created and worked with an Alumni Engagement Board, to create programming and connection opportunities for GlobeMed alumni. The people who were a part of this board remain passionate about connecting with other GlobeMed alumni and continuing to contribute to the global health equity movement.
